This somewhat inscrutable panda was inspired by the 10th century Chinese tradition of 'Spirit Rocks', carved and sculpted stones that encouraged meditation by the viewer. There are inscriptions (in Chinese) on the back of the panda that are old Chinese adages: "True water has no scent," and "True mountain has no shape."
